The former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has cautioned the Economic Community of West African States against resorting to military action in Niger Republic.

The ECOWAS defense chiefs had recently expressed their preparedness to engage in a standby force that would help reinstate democracy in Niger, following the overthrow and detention of President Mohamed Bazoum.

El-Rufai communicated his thoughts via X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “Amidst the talk of conflict within ECOWAS, I am reminded of the 1970s rock classic by Dire Straits – ‘Brothers in Arms’, as a conflict within our region is essentially a dispute between siblings. The people of Niger Republic and those in Northern Nigeria are inseparable.

“Hence, let's go the extra mile to prevent a fraternal civil war.”

Additionally, a report from PUNCH indicated that the Nigerian Guild of Editors had called on President Bola Tinubu to employ diplomatic measures when addressing the coup in Niger Republic, asserting that “military intervention is now universally seen as an anomaly.”
