V.P Shattima at BRIC even.

Vice President Kashim Shettima clarified that Nigeria had not pursued membership in the BRICS group consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This statement came after the BRICS economic bloc announced its decision to include six new members: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Responding to questions about Nigeria's absence from the group, Shettima explained that the country had never submitted an application for BRICS membership. He emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu values consensus building and democratic processes. Shettima noted the complexity of various factors that needed consideration, including engagement with the economic advisory council, Federal Executive Council, and National Assembly. These considerations would precede any decision to join BRICS.

Speaking from the BRICS Summit in South Africa, where Shettima represented Nigeria, he also directed a message to Nigerians living in South Africa. He urged them to respect the laws of their host country and to show consideration towards local citizens.

The announcement of the inclusion of new members was set to take effect from January 1. Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the historical significance of this expansion, stating that it marked a new beginning for BRICS cooperation. He believed that the enlargement would inject renewed energy into the collaborative mechanism, strengthening global peace and development efforts.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed celebrated the momentous occasion for his country, the second-most populous in Africa. In Iran, senior presidential advisor Mohammad Jamshidi viewed the decision as a historic and strategic achievement for Tehran's foreign policy. Both Egypt and the UAE expressed their eagerness to collaborate within this loosely defined consortium, representing a significant portion of the world's population and wealth.
