Nigeria Labor Congress

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has initiated a two-day warning strike set to commence on Tuesday, September 5, due to the Federal Government's failure to address the challenges stemming from the removal of fuel subsidy. This development follows a series of actions taken by organized labor to protest what they perceive as "anti-people" policies under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.

On August 2, 2023, the NLC, Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliated unions staged demonstrations in various parts of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos, Abia, Plateau, Kaduna, Kano, Rivers, Zamfara, Katsina, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Kwara, Ogun, Imo, Ondo, and Edo. These protests were in response to a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government, demanding the immediate reversal of what they consider detrimental policies, such as the recent hike in PMS (Premium Motor Spirit) prices, increased public school fees, and the release of eight months' withheld salary of university lecturers and workers.

Furthermore, the NLC called for an upward revision of the minimum wage, from N30,000 to N200,000, citing the President's acknowledgment in his inauguration speech on May 29, 2023, that "subsidy is gone," which they argue has eroded the peace of mind of Nigerians. Despite several attempts at negotiations between the Presidency and the unions aimed at providing relief to Nigerians facing hardship following the removal of petrol subsidies, these talks have yielded no fruitful results.
