During the removal of subsidies on fuel and a period of economic
difficulty, Nigerians have allocated no less than 482 million Naira in a single month for the
purpose of watching movies.
Mr. Opeyemi Ajayi, the National
Chairman of the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), shared in an
interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that Nigerians have
spent no less than 482 million Naira to watch movies within a month, despite
the fuel subsidy removal and economic challenges. He noted that this revenue
was generated in July 2023, although it was a decrease from the 567 million
Naira earned in June.
Ajayi mentioned that the total
number of viewers who attended cinemas across the country during the reviewed
month was 218,395. He encouraged more Nigerians to consider
visiting cinemas as a way to relax during their leisure time.
He stated, "We recorded a total
sales of N482,528,117 for July with 218,395 viewers
in the cinemas. The cinemas are not doing bad but we encourage more Nigerians
to cultivate the habit of visiting the cinemas."
Ajayi added that the movies
scheduled for exhibition in cinemas in August include titles like
"Akuddaya," "Meg 2," "Teenage Mutant Minja,"
"A Bag of Trouble," "Blue Beetle," "Mikolo,"
"The Modern Woman," "Retribution," and "Kesari."
It was observed that the revenue
generated in July was less than the amount earned in June, and the total viewer
admission in cinemas during July was 218,395, which was lower than the figure
for June by 210,299.
Ajayi also noted that cinemas
experienced a slight increase in patronage during July due to the numerous
public holidays in that month.
