ASUU - Tinubu |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a fresh warning of a potential new round of industrial action against the Federal Government due to the government's failure to release long-standing promotion arrears owed to its members. The announcement came after a National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Maiduguri (UNMAID) in Borno state.
ASUU's statement expressed concern over the accumulation of several months of promotion arrears, which resulted from issues arising from the enrollment of academics onto the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). Despite the union's efforts and appeals from university administrations, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation has not resolved this matter.
In addition to the promotion arrears issue, ASUU expressed distress over reports of extensive employment irregularities tied to the IPPIS. The union highlighted revelations of these activities during the House of Representatives' Probe Panel on IPPIS. ASUU asserted that this trend goes against the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2003 and the Guidelines for Appointments and Promotions of individual universities. The union rejected any illegal appointments endorsed by the IPPIS and its affiliates within Nigerian public universities.
ASUU's statement emphasized the importance of the immediate resolution of these issues to ensure industrial peace and harmony within the academic community.
