New BRICS Member |
Nigeria has not been included in the new additions to BRICS, the group of major emerging economies that consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. South Africa's president, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, revealed on August 24, 2023, that the six new countries joining BRICS are Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The decision to expand the membership of BRICS was reached during the 15th BRICS Summit of Heads of State and Government held from August 22 to August 24 in Johannesburg, South Africa. These new members are set to join BRICS starting from January 1, 2024.
The BRICS expansion has led to the consortium now controlling over 50% of the world's oil reserves. While South Africa's Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor initially mentioned that 12 countries were interested in joining, the announcement ultimately included Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
President Matamela Ramaphosa emphasized that BRICS is characterized by diversity and an equal partnership among nations that may hold differing viewpoints but share a common vision for a better world.
