Tinubu Nigerian president

President Bola Tinubu has responded to the recent coup in Gabon, which resulted in the ousting of President Ali Bongo and his subsequent house arrest. In his statement, Tinubu emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law in Africa. The coup was instigated by certain military personnel who cited perceived flaws in the recent general election held in Gabon. These officers admitted that the election held on August 26, 2023, did not meet the criteria for transparency, credibility, and inclusivity that the Gabonese people had hoped for.

The military officers also pointed out the presence of irresponsible and unpredictable governance, which had led to a deteriorating social cohesion and an increased risk of the country descending into chaos. In response, President Tinubu's Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, conveyed the President's concerns about the spread of autocratic tendencies across various regions of the continent. Tinubu, who has championed democracy and made significant personal sacrifices, firmly believes that power should be in the hands of the people, not wielded through force.

Ngelale underscored Tinubu's commitment to preserving the rule of law and advocating for constitutional resolutions and electoral dispute mechanisms. Tinubu is actively engaging with other African Union heads of state to forge a comprehensive consensus on the best course of action in addressing the crisis in Gabon. He aims to counter the growing trend of autocracy that is sweeping across the continent and ensure a unified response to this challenge.
