Coup Military

The Gabonese military has recently declared a coup, resulting in the removal of President Ali Bongo from power. The announcement was made on national television in Gabon during the early hours of August 30, 2023. In their statement, the military disclosed that they had invalidated the election results, disbanded all governmental institutions, and sealed the country's borders. The military leaders assert that their actions are on behalf of Gabon's security and defense forces.

President Ali Bongo, who initially assumed office in 2009 following his father's passing, secured a third term in the recent election. However, the opposition vehemently contested the election's fairness and validity.

The military officers proclaimed, "In the interest of the Gabonese populace, we have chosen to safeguard peace by terminating the current administration." This development coincides with ongoing efforts to address the removal of a legitimately elected president in Niger Republic.

At this juncture, both the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) have not yet issued responses to the situation in Gabon. It's worth noting that developments in this matter are still unfolding, and further updates are anticipated.
