Some among Nigerians Governors |
Kano State Governor, Yusuf Abba Kabir, has been receiving widespread accolades for his commendable decision to slash university and other students' school fees by a significant 50%. This substantial reduction in fees was officially announced by Dr. Yusfu Kofar Mata, the State's Commissioner for Higher Education, in a recent interview.
Explaining the rationale behind this progressive step, Commissioner Mata emphasized that the governor's move aims to alleviate the financial burden on parents during these economically trying times. The decision comes as a response to the prevailing economic challenges that have placed increased stress on families' financial resources.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration, attuned to the hardships experienced by families, undertook this initiative to alleviate the financial constraints resulting from the recent surge in registration fees. This measure is set to benefit a range of educational institutions including Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUST), Yusuf Maitama Sule University (YUMSUK), and Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies (AKSIL). Notably, Kano State Polytechnic, Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Audu Bako College of Agriculture, and Kano College of Remedial Science (KAS) are also encompassed by this appreciable gesture.
Prior to this, the governor had taken the initiative to allocate N700 million to cover school fees for 7,000 state indigenes studying at Bayero University Kano (BUK). Furthermore, an allocation of N854 million was approved for the Auren Zaurawa Mass Wedding Initiative.
Governor Abba Kabir highlighted that the approval of the N700 million for Kano students at BUK was a result of the prevailing economic crisis in the country. He elucidated this during a state executive council meeting, emphasizing that it forms part of the government's strategy to mitigate the adverse impacts of the prevailing economic conditions. The governor's statement underscored his commitment to providing relief to students and families in the face of financial constraints.
Beyond the education sector, the state government showcased its dedication to the welfare of its citizens. Funds were also allocated for the first phase of the Auren Zaurawa Mass Wedding Initiative, alongside the establishment of a special committee aimed at resolving outstanding pension arrears for retirees from the Kano State Civil Service. Furthermore, the government took steps to improve infrastructure by approving the rehabilitation of pedestrian bridges at Bayero University Kano's Old Campus, Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies, and the Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education.
Governor Yusuf Abba Kabir's decisions reflect a deep commitment to the well-being of his constituents and the state's education system, particularly during a period of economic challenges. His initiatives aim to alleviate the financial strain on families, thereby contributing positively to the educational prospects and overall quality of life for Kano's residents.
