The Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is actively seeking out exceptional researchers and experts specializing in Artificial Intelligence (AI). This initiative was announced by Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, on August 28, 2023. Dr. Tijani's statement was made through a white paper that was shared via X, formerly known as Twitter.


Dr. Tijani explained that these chosen individuals will play a crucial role in formulating the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy for Nigeria. This strategy is designed to guide the AI revolution in ways that drive job creation, promote social inclusion, and support sustainable development objectives.

To craft this strategy, the Ministry aims to build upon the foundation laid by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The goal remains the same: to channel the power of AI toward addressing critical national challenges.

In order to accomplish this ambitious goal, Mr. Tijani and his team have adopted the McKinsey methodology. This methodology involves sourcing articles within the AI field authored by individuals affiliated with institutions in Nigeria. Furthermore, they have trained their research models to accurately identify Nigerian names, making it easier to pinpoint AI researchers.

Dr. Tijani expressed, "We're assembling a curated list of top researchers of Nigerian descent from around the globe to collaborate with us in shaping the National AI Strategy. This strategy will guide our endeavors in creating innovative technological solutions to address our nation's most pressing issues."

He also called upon the public's assistance: "If you are aware of any researchers, Nigerian or otherwise, who have contributed to the Nigerian market, we encourage you to share their information in the comments."

In light of the imperative need to responsibly harness the AI revolution for national advancement, the creation of a National AI Strategy for Nigeria stands as a vital endeavor. This strategy seeks to steer AI developments toward the achievement of key national objectives, including job creation, social inclusion, and sustainable development.
