Wike FCT minister |
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a directive for the immediate identification and apprehension of the owner of a two-story building that collapsed in Abuja during Wednesday night. The incident occurred in a building located at Lagos Crescent, Garki Village, Garki District, resulting in a tragic situation involving at least 39 residents. Tragically, two individuals have been confirmed as deceased, while 37 were successfully rescued and transported to different hospitals for medical attention.
The collapse of the building transpired at approximately 11 p.m. amidst heavy rainfall, and initial rescue operations faced delays due to the absence of an available excavator. This led to manual efforts being the primary means of rescue during the night.
Nyesom Wike, speaking at the scene, expressed his concern over the unfortunate incident and questioned why the resettlement of original residents from the area had not been carried out by the FCT Administration over the years. Despite this, he acknowledged the efforts of agencies such as NEMA and FEMA in the rescue operations. Wike emphasized the need to promptly raise funds for covering hospital bills for the rescued individuals, in order to prevent further loss of life.
Furthermore, Wike stressed the importance of adhering to building codes and regulations to prevent such incidents. He expressed his intent to take immediate action to resettle the affected residents and prevent further development in the area. He also indicated that government decisions, although sometimes uncomfortable, are ultimately made in the best interest of the people.
Dr. Abbas Idriss, the Director General of FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA, provided an update on the situation, stating that 37 people had been successfully rescued and transported to medical facilities within Abuja. He acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the rescue team despite the challenges posed by the ongoing rain and the need for an excavator to expedite the removal of individuals from the debris.
