Abdel-Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, revealed the decision of the West African inter-governmental organization during an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

In a late-night speech on Saturday, Abdourahmane Tiani, the self-proclaimed Head of State for Niger Republic, announced that the nation would transition to civilian rule within a span of three years.

The leader of the coup didn't provide specifics about the plan but mentioned that the principles guiding the transition would be determined in a dialogue held by the junta within 30 days.

Tiani stated, "Our objective isn't to hold onto power. The transition phase will not surpass three years. In the meantime, political parties are requested to present their transition strategies within 30 days."

Following a meeting with a delegation from ECOWAS, led by former Nigerian Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the junta leader spoke out.

In response to Tiani's proposal, Musah conveyed that ECOWAS would no more tolerate extended transition periods in the region.

"ECOWAS will not permit any prolonged transitions in the region. They must prepare to relinquish power as soon as possible and focus on their core duty, which is safeguarding Niger's territorial integrity."
